The Cast of 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Recreates the Baby Groot Dance On Stage (VIDEO)
Getting ready for the long weekend but still stuck at work and wondering where your life went wrong? Well, we’ve got a little silver lining for you, in the form of a crummy video of "Guardians of the Galaxy" actors Dave Bautista and Michael Rooker recreating the sequence at the end of the film with baby Groot dancing. It is a delight.
The impromptu scene recreation happened at the Wizard World Chicago, a fairly widely attended comic book convention. Bautista, who played Drax the Destroyer, is spot on in Xeroxing his performance from the movie while Rooker takes some “Magic Mike”-style liberties with Groot boogying down. (Rooker, for those unfamiliar with his human visage, played buck-toothed, blue-skinned baddie Yondu.) The footage, courtesy of io9, isn’t the best quality, but that doesn’t matter - your heart will explode with joy just the same.

What Makes a Good TV Series Finale?
What makes a good series finale? Three events this week bring this question into focus: Sunday’s “True Blood” series ender, Monday’s celebration of the departed “Breaking Bad” at the Emmys, and Wednesday’s Vox interview with David Chase, where the “Sopranos” creator finally offered an answer to the question of whether Tony died at the end of the notorious blackout finale of the 1999-2007 series.
All three of these finales, plus others of shows that went off the air this year (“Dexter,” “How I Met Your Mother”) drew both kudos and complaints. Some fans found these finales satisfying and others found them cheap copouts. It almost makes you sorry for the writers, who seem bound to disappoint some faction of fans, no matter how they choose to wrap things up.
Take “True Blood,” for instance. (Warning: Spoilers follow.) Fans who’d been watching since the beginning of the HBO series seven years ago may have expected Sookie (Anna Paquin) and Vampire Bill (Stephen Moyer) to end up together. For such fans, Bill’s insistence on having Sookie put him out of his misery (instead of partaking of the Hepatitis-V cure) so that she could live a normal life (whatever that meant) made little sense. The finale also seemed in a rush to tie up loose ends for most of the other surviving characters. (Some, like Sam and Lafayette, were given especially short shrift.) And the happily-ever-after Thanksgiving tableau (which made the vampire drama look like the opening credits of NBC’s “Parenthood”) that saw Sookie pregnant and living with an unseen new man frustrated those who wanted to see Sookie and up with Bill, Eric (Alexander Skarsgard), or at least some other character not introduced in the last moments of the series.
On the other hand, the finale did manage to encapsulate neatly the theme of the entire series, in Sookie’s question to the preacher of whether, if we’re all created by God, any of us can be considered mistakes. That’s a nice way of summing up the series central vampires-as-gays metaphor. If everyone, even once-closeted fringe-dwellers like vampires, is a human with dignity and deserving of love (everyone, that is, except bigots like Sarah Newlin (Anna Camp), whose fate is to live a life devoid of hope, chained up in the Fangtasia basement, to be fed upon by wealthy vampires), then it’s no wonder that the finale centered on the impromptu human/vampire wedding of Hoyt and Jessica and ended with that human/vampire/fairy/shapeshifter Thanksgiving celebration. In the end, it doesn’t really matter who Sookie’s man is, only that she found one without giving up the fairy powers that make her who she is.
So if you thought your favorite “True Blood” character got either shortchanged or over-explained, you’re not alone. The episode seemed designed to please and infuriate in equal measure.
That’s hard for fans to accept, for any series finale. We want our hours, our years, of emotional investment in the show and its characters to be rewarded in a way that honors our commitment, even though the elements we often admire about shows - how true-to-life the characters are, how complex the plotting is - mean that tidy resolutions that offer closure for all the characters are hard to come by. Maybe the only series finale of the past decade that remained true to its premise while offering closure for all the protagonists was mortuary drama “Six Feet Under,” which told us how each of them would die.
Still, this past year was full of unusually unsatisfying finales, from “Dexter” (he becomes a lumberjack? Really?) to “How I Met Your Mother” (all those years of preparing for the Mother’s arrival and for Robin and Barney’s wedding were a big head-fake? Really?). Even “True Detective,” whose next season will center on all-new characters and a new storyline, ended its first season of deep philosophizing and arcane literary references by having its sleuths stumble upon the killer almost by dumb luck rather than expert puzzle-solving skills.
It’s no wonder, then, that Monday’s 66th annual Primetime Emmys served as a celebration of a series whose finale we’re still talking about in mostly positive terms 11 months later, “Breaking Bad.” True, Walt (Bryan Cranston) almost too neatly tied up all his loose ends before he died, but then, that’s the kind of person he was. And he didn’t tie up all loose ends; he didn’t get to reconcile with his son, for instance. But he did free Jesse (Aaron Paul), kill off his remaining enemies, and provide financially for his family’s future. Most important, he finally admitted to his wife Skylar (Anna Gunn) that he didn’t turn to crime just to build a nest egg for his survivors but also because he enjoyed it. Everyone pretty much got what the fans felt they deserved, the show went out on a high note, and the series as a whole ended up looking like a classic, especially in light of this year’s shows with weaker finales.
The ultimate in divisive, ambiguous finales was, of course, the 2007 conclusion to “The Sopranos,” with its buildup of unbearable tension in that diner and its abrupt blackout, leaving Tony’s (James Gandolfini) fate in narrative limbo. To this day, it’s a climax fans argue about bitterly - which is also a measure of its success. Fans don’t just debate whether or not Tony was about to die, but whether series creator David Chase ended the show in a fitting way or cheated fans out of closure by refusing to reveal Tony’s fate.
For seven years, Chase has declined to say whether Tony survived long enough to finish his plate of onion rings or not, essentially arguing that it doesn’t matter because Tony’s story was over. Even if he lived, he’d still be sentenced to life as Tony Soprano - always having to look over his shoulder, always having to deal with his resentful family - and that might be poetic justice enough.
Wednesday’s Vox interview seems to be the first time Chase has allowed the door to swing one way or the other. The article quotes him as saying of Tony, “No, he isn’t” — though it doesn’t say what question he’s answering (presumably, “Is Tony dead?”).
If that’s really what Chase meant to say, then the remark is itself a puzzler. Why break the silence now? Why break it at all? Why ruin the ambiguity he’s made a point of preserving all these years?
Indeed, Chase and some of his TV critic acolytes seem to have spent the last couple of days walking back the remark. Chase issued a press release insisting that his remark was misconstrued. “There is a much larger context for that statement and as such, it is not true,” the release read. “As David Chase has said numerous times on the record, ‘Whether Tony Soprano is alive or dead is not the point.’ To continue to search for this answer is fruitless. The final scene of ‘The Sopranos’ raises a spiritual question that has no right or wrong answer.”
You could take Chase’s press release one step further and argue that whatever he says doesn’t matter, even if he’s the guy who created the series and wrote and directed the last episode. No matter what he says, the episode exists, the ending exists, and it speaks for itself, no matter what its creator has to say about it. Whatever he may say now, a resolute answer to Tony’s fate is simply not there on the screen. The ambiguous final shot isn’t a puzzle to be solved; it’s a moment whose crystallized uncertainty is emblematic of the six seasons’ worth of episodes that preceded it.
TV is like life, in that sense. It shouldn’t be about the ending, but about the journey. That’s the way we experienced it while we watched it, and that’s the way we experience it again in reruns, not with an eye toward how it will all wrap up in the end, but rather as an interesting stop along the way, to be savored and explored for its own merits. It would be nice if the end offered enough meaning to make sense of it all, but life doesn’t always work out that way, and neither does TV.
Of course, you almost never know when life will end, while TV creators, if they’re lucky, get a season or two of advance notice as to their show’s finale date. Even so, some of them don’t seem to plan well in the season or seasons leading up to the end; characters are killed or otherwise hastily written off and plot complications are either too quickly tied up and swept aside or ignored altogether. For many, that was the problem with the final season of “True Blood” (and other recent shows, including “Lost,” which gave itself three seasons to resolve its mysteries and still ran out of time, or “The Office,” which fumbled around its last season until it could coax Steve Carell to return for the finale).
So for those series whose finales we’ll see during the upcoming season (“Boardwalk Empire,” “Mad Men,” “Parks and Recreation”), you scriptwriters have your work cut out for you. Plan well, but realize that you’re not going to make every fan happy, tie up every loose end, or give every character satisfying closure. So you might as well embrace a little ambiguity. Better to leave fans wanting more than to overstuff them and make them feel queasy about the entire series.

Fall Movie Preview 2014: The 40 Most Must-See Movies
Time to get serious everybody.
After a summer of frivolity and fun, defined largely by large monsters, even larger transformers, and a raccoon that spoke like Bradley Cooper and carried a very large gun, the fall movie season is now upon us, which means that every studio, large and small, will be trotting out their finest product in a bid for audience affection and awards season gold. And, if this list is any indication, both will be vied for with equal intensity.

'Gone Girl' Director David Fincher Sells Sexy in Four New Gap Ads (VIDEO)
Filmmaker David Fincher is one of the greatest directors currently living, having given us genuine masterpieces like "Fight Club" and "Zodiac." He also, occasionally, needs to get paid. So every so often he directs very expensive (and expensive-looking) commercials for companies who want his distinctive look and style for their products. And just like in his feature film work, the results are almost always brilliant (like a series of deliriously hilarious Nike commercials he directed in the nineties that featured Dennis Hopper as an unhinged referee).
Fincher’s latest commercial work, as Adage points out, is for the Gap, who are doing a massive rebranding this fall. They’re attempting to move away from the “chinos your less cool coworkers wear” image into something sexier, more vital, and definitely more youthful. The opening salvo in this campaign are a series of black-and-white commercials artfully directed by Fincher that are really, really cool.
The ads feature the new Gap slogan (“Dress Normal.”), along with more provocative catch phrases like “Simple clothes for you to complicate” and “the uniform of rebellion and conformity” (I think I took a class with this exact same title at the New School). The visuals, themselves, are arresting, full of Fincher’s lush widescreen black-and-white photography, precise compositions, sexy young actors immaculately framed, and a vaguely film noir-ish vibe. Quite frankly it would be easy for us to just watch these commercials on a loop until his next film, "Gone Girl," opens on October 3rd. That’s how good they are. Watch them below! While “Friends" stole our hearts and "Family Guy" had us howling with laughter, between the heartbreak and the side-splitting these classics sitcoms were making a few mistakes. In Honor Of Its 30th Anniversary, 'Ghostbusters' Gets the Honest Trailer Treatment (VIDEO)
One of the most delightful corners of the movie-obsessed Internet is the one occupied by the mad geniuses over at Screen Junkies, and specifically their Honest Trailers videos that periodically go up on YouTube for the sole purpose of making a long day seem much, much enjoyable. (If you don’t have anything to do on this pre-holiday Thursday, going through the older installments would be a very good idea.)
The newest Honest Trailer is an oldie but goodie: the original "Ghostbusters," timed, as our friendly narrator suggests, to both the 30th anniversary and in light of the endless sequel/reboot talk. More than anything the Honest Trailer commentary makes you realize how much different movies were in the eighties - you could smoke in a PG-rated movie (and not just one character, seemingly every Ghostbuster lights up at one point or another), get away with lewd sexual suggestiveness, and, well, movie stars could look as doughy and ethnic as Harold Ramis, Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd.
There are a lot of great points brought up in the Honest Trailers rundown of “Ghostbusters,” and it’s a testament to both how funny and lovable the format is and how good the original movie really was, that it doesn’t lessen your appreciation for the film in the slightest. The “Ghostbusters” can face down phantasmagorical spirits and nerdy nitpicking any day of the week.

'True Blood's Pam Lives On in 'Once Upon a Time'
"True Blood" is over, but we’ll be getting a dose of Pam’s biting sass thanks to “Once Upon a Time,” the ABC show about a small town full of characters from fairy tales.
Kristin Bauer van Straten is returning to the show to reprise her role as Maleficent, the purple-clad baddie who was supposedly offed at the end of the first season. Guess Maleficent didn’t meet the True Death, eh? Van Straten’s character will reportedly have a major arc, so we’re hoping to see lots more fabulous villainy, and perhaps even more about Maleficent’s life before she broke bad.
This isn’t the first time that “Once” has gotten all Disneyfied on us. There’s also going to be a "Frozen" arc in the ABC show, with Elizabeth Lail as Anna and Georgina Haig as icy Queen Elsa. The real question is whether this Maleficent will have more in common with Angelina Jolie's take on the character or the OG illustrated one.
We’re still holding out hope for an Eric and Pam “True Blood" spin-off, though.
“Once Upon a Time” returns on September 28 at 8 p.m. ET.

Homer Simpson Chills Out in This ALS Ice Bucket Challenge (VIDEO)
If you’ve ever wanted to see Homer Simpson get squished by a Tauntaun or yeti or something in the name of charity, your wish has been granted.
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has wended its way through social media over the past month or two, prompting all sorts of people to dump buckets of ice water over their heads to raise awareness of Lou Gehrig’s Disease, aka amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
Of course, awareness isn’t the only thing it’s supposed to raise; the challenge is supposed to inspire people to make a donation to the ALS Association. You can actually make a donation without pouring a bucket of ice water over your head, as per Patrick Stewart’s charming video, but where’s the fun in that?
No matter how cynical you might be about watching cartoon characters shiver after being doused by ice water, you’ve gotta admit it’s been an effective way to raise funds.
Are you watching "The Simpsons" marathon on FXX? It ends September 1, so get on it.

7 Unanswered Questions From 'Pretty Little Liars' Season Finale
“Pretty Little Liars" is embarking on another mid-season hiatus (now what are we supposed to do with our lives?) and once again fans are left with more questions than answers. No seriously, so many questions. Not only did PLL’s epic season finale include an inexplicable death (RIP, Mona!), we still have no idea who A is, and a few brand-new mysteries were introduced to the party.
So, what unanswered questions from the finale will haunt the streets of Rosewood during “Pretty Little Liars” hiatus? You’re about to find out!
1. Who Hit Bethany Young On The Head?
We know that Spencer Hastings’ preppy older sister, Melissa, buried Bethany Young alive (whoops!), but who delivered the near-fatal blow to her head? No clue. What we do know is that it most likely wasn’t Alison DiLaurentis, as she passed her lie-detector test with flying colors. And unless Ali’s so delusional that she’s taken to believing her own web of lies, this recently resurrected it-girl is in the clear.
2. Why Did Ali Want Bethany Dead?
According to Spencer Hastings and Mona Vanderwaal’s expert sleuthing, Mrs. DiLaurentis was having an affair with Bethany’s father, and this somehow sent Ali into a sociopathic fit of rage. The little liars think Ali is responsible for Bethany’s death, but if a mere bout of jealousy led her to kill Bethany, why didn’t she also kill Spencer? After all, Mrs. D had an affair with Mr. Hastings as well! The story doesn’t quite line up….
3. Who Killed Mona?
Mona was murdered by a blonde in a black hoodie, and while the PLL Powers That Be clearly want us to think the prime suspect is Ali, we’re not so sure. Yeah, Ali and Mona’s killer are both blonde, and yeah, Ali looked way too happy when the police announced Mona’s homicide, but the mystery broad in question was somewhat taller than Mona. And if there’s one thing we’ve learned from PLL, it’s that it’s super easy to get your hands on a blonde wig. In fact, pretty sure there’s one lurking in A’s lair….
4. Is Mona Really Dead?
The police didn’t find a body at the scene of Mona’s homicide, but there was so much blood that her survival chances are slim at best. Plus, we saw Mona’s presumably dead corpse chilling in the back of a car with a Baby Jesus statue (er, ok then) and she definitely looked all kinds of deceased. But wait! The camera also made sure to zoom in on Mona’s eye…if it had lingered a second longer would she have blinked? This wouldn’t be the first time someone got their zombie on in Rosewood, that’s all we’re saying.
5. Why Is Ali Hanging Out In A Creepy Farm?
Apparently, Paige McCullers followed Ali and her terrifying twin friends, Cindy and Mindy, out to some backwoods farm and witnessed her gathering an army of loyal disciples. Who knows what Ali’s up to (other than perfecting the art of side-eye and shade), but her “army” is sure to be a plot point in the season’s second half!
6. Is Alison A?
The Pretty Little Liars seem pretty convinced that Ali is A (and Mona claimed she had evidence before suffering “Death By Inexplicably Bleeding”), but what proof do we really have? Aside from the fact that Ali is a compulsive liar and is certainly up to no good, she’s always been there for her friends. Sure, she’s way more terrifying then your average moody teenager, but is she really capable of murder and ritualistic stalking?
7. What Is Mona’s Mom Up To?
Mona’s mom spent most of this episode ugly-crying about her daughter’s untimely doom, but she also got into the spirit of the show with a little sleuthing. We saw Mona’s mother secretly visit Rosewood High’s principle, and then Ali was called in just moments later. Did Mona pay the price for whatever her mom said to the headmaster? What are you up to, lady?
Bonus: Someone Explain How Toby Is A Policeman
Can we please discuss the important fact that Toby is a policeman now? Because last time we checked, he’d dropped out of high school and was dabbling in the art of whittling / being studly. Also, we’re pretty sure Toby’s still a teenager. Please explain yourselves, Rosewood police force.

'American Horror Story: Freak Show' Gets Licked In New Teaser, Matt Bomer Joins Cast (VIDEO)
Ah, “American Horror Story: Freak Show.” You really are going to be disgusting; at least if these brief teasers are any indications.
The latest teaser, after the claw-handed ditty from last week, features a man licking a lollipop. Okay, kind of weird you say. Maybe it’s a fetish thing. But then you realize that the reason the man can lick the lollipop so vigorously is because he’s got a forked tongue. You know, like a lizard. Say it with us now: ewwwww!
Besides the forked tongue freak show guy, this teaser is also notable for the first one to have the actual date of the premiere: Wednesday, October 8th. This is very good. October 8th isn’t that far away.
“American Horror Story: Coven,” last year’s installment of the anthology series, is up for six Emmy awards tonight, including best mini-series and nominations for Jessica Lange and Sarah Paulson (both of whom will return for “Freak Show”).
Also included in the “Freak Show” cast: Evan Peters, Frances Conroy, Denis O’Hare, Jamie Brewer, Emma Roberts, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Gabourey Sidibe, and Michael Chiklis, with recurring cast members including Wes Bentley, John Carroll Lynch (as Twisty, the “clown killer”) and Patti LaBelle. The Hollywood Reporter also noted that the almost supernaturally adorable Matt Bomer will appear in one episode of the fourth season of the series, in an unspecified role. Spooky!

New 'Better Call Saul' Teaser Clues You Into What the Show's All About (VIDEO)
One of the biggest question marks in the upcoming television landscape is: what, exactly, is “Breaking Bad" spin-off "Better Call Saul" going to be like? Well, thanks to a brief teaser released by AMC, we now know a little more.
The clip is very, very short and consists mainly of co-creator and executive producer Vince Gilligan chatting amiably with fellow co-creator and show-runner Peter Gould (who created the Saul Goodman character on the original series). There’s a bit of new footage but this clip is more designed to bring you into the fold of the new series and orient you as to the series’ goals.
“We are about half a decade before the events of ‘Breaking Bad,’” Gilligan explains. “Before Walter White meets Saul Goodman.” Gould chimes in, “He didn’t start out this way.” That’s right. When the series begins, Saul Goodman (played, once again, by Bob Odenkirk) isn’t Saul Goodman, but rather mild-mannered attorney Jimmy McGill. Gould continues: “How do you become Saul Goodman? And why?” Gould then tantalizingly rolls out another question: “What kind of problem do you have that becoming Saul Goodman solves it?”
We then see a brief bit of actual “Better Call Saul” footage before that damnably far away date of “February” is once again promised.
And while there are still some questions that we have about the new series, this teaser has done the best job yet in terms of establishing what it’s going to be about and what the stakes are. Gilligan in particular seems to acknowledge the fact that even though the series is set before the events of “Breaking Bad,” there’s still a lot of mystery to be mined from this particular oddball.
